The Good, The Bad, The Ugly...

The Good:

The Crape Myrtle's are starting to Bloom... well at least this one just started. The others in the neighborhood have been blooming for some time now. The previous owner planted this crape myrtle bush... Unfortunately in a less then ideal area, But its nice to look at for now until it gets too big. Ill post a good picture of the whole bush once its in full swing.

Also I found a nice Volunteer in my backyard :D. I think they are black eyed susans ? The strange thing, this is growing in full shade ? Any who It sure was a nice surprise when I found it.

The Bad:

Ah the bad :(. *shakes fist at previous owner* The last Bradford pear in the front yard has finally fallen or at least 1/3 of it did the rest I brought down... with lots of hard work. Needless to say I was not thrilled about waking up to this today. When I looked out the window I was afraid it had squashed my new flower bed.... It was very close.

The good news is I got it all down, and on the street, but for now the yard looks like a war zone

The Ugly:

The ugly? well this weed is growing .... well like a weed in my backyard. it is so vigorous its almost become the only plant in the backyard. Does anyone perchance know what the weed is ? It has little pink flowers as you can see in the picture. I figured the flower picture might help someone Identify it ?

My First Garden

Well today I get to blog about my first garden. I have been blogging here, and there showing some pictures of plants I have started from seed this year. I have also shown you some pictures of other gardens around this area, but today I finally blog about my garden. I planted everything last night but was not able to get a picture until today after the rain (yes rain... about time). I know its a bad idea to plant in the middle of summer, but I was too excited, so I will have to make sure to keep a close eye so they do not dry out.

Here is the list of plants in the garden:
Daisy 'Becky',Russian Sage, Agastache 'Blue Fortune', Veronica, Echinacea 'Harvest Moon', Phlox Paniculata 'Cotton Candy', Coreopsis 'Sunfire', Sedum 'Autmn Fire', Rudbeckia 'Cappuccino', Hollyhock 'Chater's Double Mix', Salvia 'Blue Queen, English Daisy's, Mother of Thyme, Creeping Jenny, Sedum Tetratinum, Creeping Phlox.

The Phlox 'Cotton Candy' Got a bit dried out on my absence during the 4th of July weekend, But is now starting to come back though I think some of the leaves have been damaged beyond return. Should I just cut the dead leaves off , and remove the flowers to help with root and leaf growth ?

A Work In Progress.

The past few days I have been working on landscaping in my front yard. The house I live in is pretty much a blank canvas which can be a good thing sometimes. Over the past few days I have marked out a path way to the fence door which before was just grass. I also removed an old planting bed that used to be on the corner of the house. The only thing in it was a sad little box wood that I transplanted out into a container, I may use it later or not but I cant waist a plant :P.

I took a few shots during the process. Here I just finished removing all the grass from the corner bed.

I then put down an inch of composted manure. before I started the double digging process.

In all I added 12 cu feet of compost/soil conditioner. After I finished digging the bed I started removing the grass and shaping up the pathway.

I missed several pictures today, but I laid down landscape fabric over the path way. Then edged either side with some river stone I had laying around. One side was dug into the ground to make the path level.... So I had to make a little dry stack wall. Not to bad I suppose for my first experience with dry stacking, but nowhere near professional :D. I will most likely will redo the wall of the pathway when I start to dig the much larger garden bed that will be on that side.

On a side note my favorite lily has finally opened up today XD YAY! Here are a few shots of it for you to enjoy. the name of this one is Lilium 'Casa Blanca'.

Sucker for a nice plant.

Well I'm a sucker for nice plants. I went to a new nursery around here, and well I said I was gonna be strong but..... I ended up with several plants :D. The one above is Echinacia 'Harvest Moon'. I also ended up with several others: Shasta Daisy 'Becky', Agastache 'Blue Fortune', Sedum 'Autumn Fire', Hollyhock 'Chater's Double Mix', some Creeping Jenny,...........

I also Picked up this lovely Abelia 'Confetti' I could not resist this shrub its so nice. I would have got it even if it did not bloom, but that it does is a big bonus.

This lovely Phlox 'Cotton Candy' caught my eye, and I knew I had to have it. Unfortunately it was the only one they had left so I suppose I will have to take some cuttings of it.

I went to go get some Ideas for my first perrenial bed that I have been working on the past few days (double digging is so much fun........ *wink*) I have a post about the bed later this week.
